Corning Gorilla Glass with DX/DX+ announced for camera lens cover and wearables

Corning Gorilla Glass with DX-DX+

Corning is the company responsible for the most durable protective glass for smartphones, and is currently the leading company in its industry. Now, the U.S. company announces the new Gorilla Glass DX and DX+ for smartphone cameras.

This time Corning wants to improve not only the durability and strength of our smartphones’ lenses, but also their performance for photography and video capture. Hence the company now announces the new glass composite materials – DX and DX+.

Corning, the company behind Gorilla Glass, has announced a new technology to protect mobile cameras . According to Corning, this glass not only seeks to avoid the typical scratches of carrying the phone in your pocket, but its anti-reflective coating promises to let more light pass through than conventional coatings.

According to Corning, Samsung will be the first company to adopt this new product in its mobile cameras, so it is expected that it will be an element that we will see in its next flagships.

Gorilla Glass for cameras

Corning lenses fall into the Gorilla Glass DX and Gorilla Glass DX + category . This technology was announced back in 2018 and at first it was focused mainly for smartwatches. In fact, Samsung was one of the first companies to implement it on its Galaxy Watch. Now this category is expanded to also protect the camera of mobile phones.

According to Corning, one of the key feature of this glass is that it not only protects against scratches, but also improves optical performance . The lenses of mobile camera have anti-reflective coatings to improve light collection. That coating, however, can cause some of the light to bounce off and result in weird artifacts in the image.

According to the company, conventional coatings allow 95% of light to pass through, while Gorilla Glass DX and DX + lenses allow 98% of light to pass through . On paper, more light, better photos, although we already know that the quality of a photo depends on many factors.

At the moment we do not know which will be the first smartphone to mount this technology, but Corning says that Samsung will be the first manufacturer to incorporate it. We will have to wait until the Korean firm decides on the matter to know its performance.

Gorilla Glass has been designed into more than 8 billion devices by more than 45 major brands. Through its Mobile Consumer Electronics Market-Access Platform, Corning continues its legacy of innovation with market-leading cover glasses, as well as glass and optics for semiconductor products, that enhance performance, deliver new connectivity features, enable new designs, and support immersive user experiences with augmented reality and 3D sensing.

Since 2016, Gorilla Glass DX products have been utilized on more than 30 million wearable devices and are now being adopted on mobile camera lens covers.
