Yamaha EMF electric scooter Launched with striking design and swappable batteries

Yamaha EMF Electric Scooter

Just a few hours after Gogoro announced a major fundraising announcement, Yamaha announced a new electric scooter that will be powered by the company’s swappable batteries.

The new electric scooter is called the Yamaha EMF, and it has an eye-catching look. In terms of design, it’s a departure from anything Yamaha has ever produced.

Although the vehicle’s full specifications have not yet been released, a 7.6 kW mid-mounted motor has been confirmed by the manufacturer. With a 130/70-10 tire, it appears to have a final chain drive for the rear wheel.

The scooter’s rapid stop is made possible by the combined braking system (CBS) and four piston hydraulic disc brakes.

Yamaha claims a 0-50 km/h (31 mph) time of 3.5 seconds, so the acceleration should be quick. The scooter’s top speed hasn’t been revealed yet by the manufacturer.

The scooter also has a unique storage area between the rider’s feet. It appears to include both a cupholder and storage space for small items, however it does not appear to lock when the lid is shut.

Yamaha Gogoro partnership

When it comes to powering the Yamaha EMF, Gogoro uses its own batteries, which are specifically built to function with Gogoro’s battery swap system.

A strategically positioned network of GoStations, each with dozens of batteries, allows users to swap out their depleted batteries with ones that have just been recharged.

Almost as many GoStations as gas stations can be found in Gogoro’s home country of Taiwan, where Yamaha will be launching the new EMF.

There are already more GoStations than gas outlets in major cities like Taipei.

Scooter manufacturers adore Gogoro’s swappable batteries because they eliminate the need for battery development. Rather than reinventing the wheel, manufacturers like Yamaha may construct electric scooter designs around an existing battery architecture (or the battery).

Gogoro batteries are used in nearly all Taiwanese electric two-wheelers, and the company has been recognized as a global leader in battery swap architecture.

Yamaha’s partnership with Gogoro is not the first time though, as the EC-05, Yamaha’s electric scooter, was revealed in 2019 as a result of the two companies’ first joint venture. Gogoro’s pair of batteries were also employed in that scooter.
