iOS 18, announced at WWDC 2024, brings a long-awaited feature: Dark Mode for the Home Screen and app icons! Let’s dive into how to activate this mode and personalize your iPhone experience (similar steps apply to iPadOS 18).

Here’s how to set up and use Home Screen Dark Mode on iOS 18:

  • iPhone compatible with iOS 18 (See the list in this article for reference: [insert link to your previous article on iOS 18 supported devices])
  • iOS 18 installed on your iPhone (public beta expected in July 2024)

  1. Enter Edit Mode: Long-press on any empty space on your Home Screen until all the app icons start jiggling.

  2. Access the Theme Menu: In the top left corner of your screen, you’ll see an “Edit” button. Tap on it. A menu will appear at the bottom of your screen with various customization options.

  3. Choose Dark Mode: Look for the menu options related to theme or appearance. You should see options like “Automatic,” “Dark,” and “Light.” Select “Dark” to activate Dark Mode for your Home Screen.

  4. Optional: Automatic Switching: If you prefer Dark Mode to switch automatically based on the time of day, choose “Automatic” instead.

  5. Exit Edit Mode: Once you’ve chosen your preferred theme, tap on “Done” in the top right corner, or simply press your home button to exit Edit Mode.

Additional Notes:

  • Dark Mode might also affect the appearance of widgets on your Home Screen. The specific behavior may depend on the individual widget.
  • Some third-party apps might not yet be fully compatible with Dark Mode and may appear differently.
