TECNO announces Camon 18, 18P and 18 Premier with 120 Hz displays and MediaTek chipsset

TECNO demonstrated, without fanfare, its new intermediate smartphones to official platforms before its launch. This Monday (04 October), the Chinese manufacturer made official the Camon 18 Series of phones, which will debut with three models — Camon 18, Camon 18P and Camon 18 Premier.

The chinese company now bets on more powerful chipsets from Mediatek for it’s mid range smartphones compared to previous models.

TECNO Camon 18

The most basic model in this series offers a 6.8 inch LCD screen with FHD+ resolution, 90 Hz refresh rate and peak brightness at 550 nits. There is a hole-punch dedicated to 16 MP selfie camera with dual flash.

On the rear, the Camon 18 phone has a triple set of cameras represented by the main 48 MP sensor, in addition to the 2 MP macro lens and depth lens with a 2 MP sensor arranged vertically in a rectangular module.

Under the hood is MediaTek’s Helio G88 chipset, an octa-core that integrates the Mali-G52 MC2 GPU and operates at up to 2.0 GHz. The handset incorporates a memory configuration with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB of internal storage.

To power this hardware, there is a 5,000 mAh battery with an 18 watt fast charge. Other specs include the presence of Android 11 under the HiOS interface; fingerprint reader on the side; and 4G LTE connectivity.

TECNO Camon 18P

With a more advanced display, the “P” model is equipped with a 6.8-inch screen with FHD+ resolution (1,080 x 2,460 pixels) distributed in a stretched ratio of 20.5:9 and 120 Hz refresh rate. There is a hole that houses the 16 MP front camera.

At the rear, there is a set of cameras more powerful than the standard model. Also represented by the 48MP main sensor, there is a depth lens with a 2MP sensor and a bokeh lens for portrait mode with a 13MP sensor.

The Camon 18P is equipped with the Helio G96 chipset, an octa-core that integrates the Mali-G57 MC2 GPU and operates at up to 2.05GHz. The model has the unique configuration of 8GB of RAM with 128GB of internal storage.

To power this hardware, there is a 5,000 mAh battery with a 33 watt fast charge. Other specs include the presence of Android 11 under HiOS 8; fingerprint reader on the side; NFC support; and FM radio.

TECNO Camon 18 Premier

The most advanced model in the series to date is the Camon 18 Premier, equipped with a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with FHD+ resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate. There is a hole in the display that houses the 32 MP front-facing camera.

At the rear, the camera array is detachable — there’s a main lens with a 64MP sensor; a 12MP sensor secondary lens that uses gimbal stabilization; is periscopic lens with 5x optical zoom that reaches 60x with hybrid zoom. This handset promises to capture more detailed images of the Moon.

The mid-range also features the Helio G96 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM, but internal storage is 256GB. A 4,750 mAh battery powers this hardware with 33 watt fast charging support.

Other specs include the presence of Android 11 under HiOS 8; fingerprint sensor on the side; and NFC support.

For now, the manufacturer has not revealed the launch prices for the smartphones, but we know that initial availability will be in Nigeria. TECNO Camon 18 and 18P will be marketed in three color options — Iris Purple, Dusk Gray or Ceramic White. The Camon 18 Premier will arrive in two shades of blue: Polar Night or Vast Sky.
