As expected, MediaTek announces its new SoC for mid-range Helio P90 smartphones with a focus on artificial intelligence and advanced photographic capabilities.

Failing to offer a new high-end solution Helio X, MediaTek strengthens its mid-range offering with a new member Helio P continuing to focus on the processing power of embedded artificial intelligence.

The new Helio P90 SoC is based on a 2 + 6 (12-nm) octocore configuration with 2 powerful ARM Cortex-A75 cores running at 2.2 GHz and 6 ARM Cortex-A55 2 GHz economical cores harmonized across all cores with CorePilot technology .

The SoC also includes a PowerVR GM 9446 GPU from Imagination Technologies (instead of an ARM Mali solution over previous generations) and an APU 2.0 for artificial intelligence that delivers four times more performance than its Helio P60 and P70 SoCs.

The processing capacity thus reaches 2.25 Tops , giving the embedded artificial intelligence strong assets for various treatments, especially for photography.

The MediaTek Helio P90 SoC can handle dual sensor configurations up to 24 + 16 megapixels or single 48 megapixel sensors , with optimized triple ISP processing.

MediaTek highlights the AI capabilities of its new SoC in augmented reality and mixed reality, with the support of many executives like TensorFlow, TF Lite, Caffe / Caffe2, still using its NeuroPilot environment.

Added to this is a Dual SIM dual VoLTE compatibility and the integration of a 4G LTE Cat 12 modem with 4×4 MIMO and 256 QAM modulation, as well as support for WiFi 802.11ac (WiFi 5) in 2×2 MIMO and Bluetooth 5.0.

The first smartphones equipped with the new MediaTek Helio P90 SoC are expected in the first quarter of 2019 .
